Bio
Alicia Leal’s surrealist paintings depict fables, myths, nature scenes, and dreamlike visions in a flat, simplified style reminiscent of Cuban folk art.
Leal graduated from the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts in Havana in 1980. She is a member of the National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists, and her work is held in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana.
Leal was born in the central Cuban province of Sancti Spíritus and derives much of the inspiration for her paintings from the folk culture of the island’s central region.
Working out of the Havana studio she shares with her husband, the painter Juan Moreira, Leal paints mystical scenes featuring symbols evoking Christian and Afro-Cuban religious traditions, mythology, and folklore, rendered in a vibrant, tropical palette.
Her work also explores gender relationships.
